Dell will start selling two laptops and one desktop running Microsoft Windows Vista on Friday as part of the program called Product RED. For each laptop and desktop sold, the two companies will donate $50 and $80 respectively to the Global Fund, which finances health programs in Africa
RED has raised $53 million for the Global Fund since it was founded in 2006. Bono, who expects to exceed that figure in 2008 alone, said the organization lost some potential partners after an article in Advertising Age questioned the effectiveness of the campaign
The Dell products offered under the RED brand will be an XPS One desktop, for $1,599, and XPS M1330 and M1530 laptop computers, which start at $1,149. The products will sell for the same price as regular Dell models. The computers will go on sale first in the United States and will be available in 30 countries by Jan. 31.
The $80 donated from each sale of a desktop is enough to buy six months' worth of AIDS-fighting medication, the companies said.
